What to do if your Charity Golf Tournament is Rescheduled

Charity Golf International • Apr 17, 2020
There's no question that everyone is in uncharted territory right now, with everyone making sacrifices and cutting corners. No one is immune to the toll this is taking, especially those in the event industry. Like everything else, charity golf tournaments are taking a backseat with most, if not all, events either postponing to a later date or canceling altogether. While canceled tournaments are nothing new to the golf industry, the unique hurdles of this time require special attention and additional preparation.
So the question is: How do we go about canceling or rescheduling our charity golf tournament in such uncertain times?

While this is obviously a challenging time for all, navigating these waters as a golf tournament coordinator is not impossible.

Don't take your foot off of the social media/promotion pedal

It may feel like all of your promotion and marketing momentum has been lost, but don't let your hard work go to waste. Social media can be your best friend in a time like this, from keeping your participants informed with the latest information about postponements to driving excitement for what's around the corner.

Whether you postpone or cancel your charity golf event, don't let your players forget what your tournament was about in the first place: the philanthropy. Show your players how they can still help the causes your tournament was supporting and keep your participants engaged.

Be as flexible as possible.

Your tournament is going to undergo some changes, and that's okay. Keeping an open mind to all viable alternatives and inevitable modifications is crucial when rescheduling something with as many moving parts as a golf tournament.

Perhaps most importantly, don't forget to put customer service first. Be available to discuss opportunities and options that work for your key players and participants, and work with them to the best of your ability. It's a delicate balance, but providing your VIP's and participants with an enjoyable experience is imperative to the overall success of your event.

Communicate with everyone

The last thing anyone needs right now is more uncertainty in their lives. Maintaining an open and transparent line of communication with everyone involved in your golf tournament should be your top priority throughout this process.

You probably already have access to your sponsor and participant's primary channels of communication (text, email, social media), so the only change here should be an increase in the frequency of communication. Avoid "gray areas" or confusion by addressing all questions and clearly laying out your plans. This will keep everyone informed and simplify everyone's lives in these uncertain times.
